Introduction

Merapi is the Stratovolcano or Composite type volcano Merapi is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted

regularly since 1548.

Located approximately 28 km north of Yogyakarta on the

border between Central Java and Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It is located in subduction zone, where the Indo-Australian

plate is sliding beneath the Eurasian plate

Its height is 2968 metres above sea level.

Merapi is the youngest group of volcano in Southern Java.

2010 Eruption

The 2010 eruptions of Mount Merapi began in late October2010 when Mount Merapi began an increasingly violent seriesof eruptions that continued into November.

Large eruption columns formed, causing numerous pyroclasticflows down the heavily populated slopes of the volcano.

The mountain continued to erupt until 30 November 2010. On3 December 2010 the official alert status was reduced to level3, from level 4, as the eruptive activity had subsided.

New dome formed after this eruption, this eruption is thesecond strongest eruption occurred in Merapi within century.

2010 Eruption: Effects

Over 354 people died. +320000 people injured.

Service: lack of clean water and electricity.

Transportation, such as airlines were disturbed.

Over 2500 building destroyed by pyrostatic ash and mudflows.

Failed in crop, such as vegetable resulting in increase of price.

Disease like DBD and Diarrhea.

Destroy in environment and national park.

2010 Eruption: Human Response

This is hard time for Indonesia which has been struck by Tsunami in

Mentawai, island west Sumatra and Merapi eruption in the same day.

Before the eruption began, Over 350,000 people were evacuated from the

affected area. However, many remained behind or returned to their homes

while the eruptions were continuing.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono arrived in Yogyakarta on the night

Friday, 5 November and had set up his command post at Gedung Agung.

Yudhoyono said he had also assigned Agung Laksono, coordinating

minister for peoples welfare, to coordinate aid from the central

government.

As this eruption occurred, countries like EU, USA, UAE and Other are

donated more than 5 million Euros for medical and shelter.

Local Musician held a donation concert to help Merapi refugees.

Merapi Today

Merapi status today is level 2.

Lacking in clean water still occur.

Cold Lava Flow is still continuing to

the south of Merapi.

Rebuilding has started this april Transportation had becomes back to

normal
