Aerial LifeAerial Photography from the 2013 Red Island Surfing CompetitionFor me, aerial photography is a beauty and a sensation. I feel something different while shooting from the air. Before shooting, I have to be aware on looking every details of the landscape and understanding the pattern and the structure of the objects that are going to be shoot. Another important thing is to make a photo with different feelings from most of my photos. To produce aerial photo, another thing to note is to prepare the equipments and understanding what lens that are going to be use. I always used Canon 500D DSLR camera with 17-45mm lens. I am also not forget to bring GoPro camera, a mini-portable video camera that can be installed anywhere necessary. While shooting from the air, I use paramotor, my favorite flying instrument, because I can explore according to exactly what I wanted. Before shooting from the air using paramotor, we have to do some research and have very good understanding of the location that will be shooted. Flying with paramotor has limitations and is very different from flying using types of aircraft or helicopter. The challenge I faced was the when photographing some of the central highlands of Papua with a high difficulty level, I expected to be able to give the best results. Then I also photographed the top of Mount Bromo, East Java, because I had to take off from a very significant altitude. In that condition, I have to do a good engine prepa-ration and accurate weather analysis in order to determine the time fly. Taking off from an altitude requires more engine power than taking off from the lowlands.Photographing SurfingAn exciting opportunity is when having a fun fly in Red Island, Banyuwangi. Incidentally that time I was invited by Mr. Piping, Indonesian surfing figure that a friend at once. I took several photos that time. Although I never took any surfing activities before, but after several shots, it looks awesome! Seeing the surfers charging waves from different angle is something extra-ordinary. How pleasure and unity with

nature is the best thing we should do in this life. Before I fly to take photos of surfing in Red island, I didn’t make any fussing preparation and I only came alone from Jakarta. Usually I take assistant and technician if it is a wide range shooting. There are different aspects between the surfing and paramotor flying analysis, especially when we talk about wind direction. My flight should be ideal when the wind is blowing onshore, so I can take-off comfortably. However, for surfing is exactly the opposite. The ideal wind direction is offshore, where the waves will have better shape. Thanks to God because I was born in this beautiful country. I can enjoy the beauty of the Indonesian nature from the air. Enjoying this beautiful world from different angle is something extra-ordinary.

Yuko Anabela: First Indonesian Surfer to Receive Scholarship Award from ISA15-year-old Yukojati Anabela from Pelabuhan Ratu in West Java Indone-sia has made history as the first ever Indonesian surfer to be a recipient of the International Surfing Association’s 2013 Individual Scholarship Pro-gram, receiving $1,000 USD and the honor of representing her country as an ISA Ambassador. Bela, as her friends call her, is one of the 50 junior surfers (13 girls and 37 boys) from 25 different countries to be awarded this scholarship in 2013.In the award letter sent to Bela by ISA President Fernando Aguerre, he wrote “…it is my honor to congratulate you on being selected as a recip-ient of the 2013 ISA Individual Scholarship. As a 2013 ISA Scholarship Recipient, you are an ISA Ambassador, and you will forever represent the ISA in your country as a dedicated surfer and student who works hard and achieves success in and out of the water. To be an ISA Ambassador is a great honor, and your effort in submitting a heartfelt and well-deserving application speaks to your dedication to both your surfing and educa-tion.”When asked to describe her feelings upon receiving the scholarship, Bela replied, “Of course I was surprised! When I found out I was home alone and I screamed with joy. I couldn’t wait till my mom came home so that I could tell her. I right away called Om Diki and told him how I won, and he was stoked too!” Diki Zulfikar is one of the senior surfers in Cimaja and the leader of the Sukabumi Surfing Association. She went on to add, “I am extremely happy, I never knew I could ever win something like an ISA scholarship. I am quite proud of winning this opportunity and in a way it has also made me more proud of my surfing.”How did her parents react to the news? My parents were very shocked at first, they couldn’t believe it either. They are extremely happy for me and they have even grown more supportive of my surfing, which makes me very happy!”What makes this even more special is the fact that there are not many girl surfers in Indonesia, especially not many Muslim girl surfers. When asked if she had any challenges along the way she replied, “To be honest there are a few challenges, I see it as a part of our culture here so I respect it, as long as I am good to others and present no harm I don’t see why a Muslim girl can’t surf. People generally tell me not to surf because I will get black or surfer girls are too sexy or that I will turn into a big tomboy. I don’t mind what they say as I love surfing and I will keep surfing because I also believe it makes you a very humble person.”And how did Bela get inspired to start surfing? “I first saw Andre Julian, one of our young local surfers, surf his heat in one of the grommet con-tests. I though WOW! He is such a great surfer, so from there I was deter-mined to learn to surf! I bugged him to teach me and he did, I’m still very grateful for his help.” Bela has been surfing now for close to five years at her home break of Cimaja in West Java, also the home of Java’s most well known pro surfer and past Indonesian surfing champion Dede Suryana. When Bela applied to the scholarship program, one of the requirements was that she had to create a budget plan to describe how she would use the $1,000 scholarship money. At the time she listed among other things surf trips, surf contests, school and parents as most important. Now that she has received the money, she says, “I would really love to buy a new surfboard, go on a surf trip to somewhere different, travel to an upcoming contest, and pay for my schooling.” Regarding her future goals, she says, “For my surfing goals I would really love to win more contests and improve my skills, so hopefully one day I could get a sponsor and may turn it into a lifetime career. For my life goals, I would like to be a good person. I have always been into my bas-ketball and surfing, so I hope one day I can be a successful athlete.”We wish Bela the best in her future plans, and hope that more Indonesian girls and women will be inspired by her example and join in the sport of surfing, and become future recipients of the ISA Individual Scholarship Program as well.

Moyo: How to be an artist of life! If you meet Moyo you will have the chance to get to know an impressive personality and learn a lot of things about local businesses and how every-body is able to reach his or her goal. More precisely, Moyo is a life artist, who did many things in his life.

ChildhoodAs a child, he grew up in Canggu where Moyo started surfing at the age of seven. Japanese people taught him how to surf. Next to the surf sport, Moyo could as well explore his passion for board ridings on skateboards. So he spent all the time he had besides Junior High School doing skating and surfing with his friends.

Starting in BusinessIn High School, the young Moyo started to work at a furniture store, where he learns how to built and construct furniture and other things for five years. He used these ability to built a skate ramp he named ‘West Side Ramp’. With its height of 3 meters and width of 2 meters, it was the first ramp in Canggu area. The ramp became quite famous as one time more than a hundred people came to Moyo’s house, including people from Jakarta, other parts of Indonesia and the world.

The Change: JapanIn 2003, Moyo left Bali and moved to Japan. In the beginning, he just wanted to visit another country but in the end, he stayed there for at least 10 years. Moyo did not tell anybody that he had left Bali, not even his parents. After he arrived in Japan he just called them and said he will stay in Japan. In anger, his father sold all of Moyo’s stuff including his ramp. Going back to regular life in Japan, he started to work in engineering, which was not easy. He had to get up at five in the morning every day just went to work and immediately slept after the work was done.

His Passion In Japan Moyo also started to play golf. At the be-ginning, he hated that kind of sport, as he did not understand the rules and the sense of the game. One time his boss took him to the golf court where he just watched him playing. Then he got interested and tried it for the first time himself. He hit the ball like he was already playing golf for years and that was the moment he felt in love with the sport. After that, Moyo went to the golf court constantly.

Back in BaliIn 2013, Moyo went back to life in Bali again and opened a warung at the beach called ‘Sand Bar’ together with his friends, the Canggu Boys. But as the Warung was very close to the ocean, a big wave flooded the whole building on high tide. After this experience, he decided to build a new bar. To minimize the danger, this bar was not located that close to the ocean. With his hopes, the Sand Bar will grow and the business will even more evolve.

Present and FutureNow, Moyo is planning and working on two new projects in Canggu. The first one is a new Warung. Since October, ‘Pis Polong’ is open for hungry people who expect good food for reasonable prices at Jalan Raya Batu Bolong No. 74. The name “Pis Polong” represents ‘Hindu Man’s Money’ which is a very suitable name for the atmosphere and concept of the Warung. As his second current project, Moyo wants to install lifeguards in Canggu at the beach. That means exactly that he is planning to build a lifeguard house with possible support by the government because it is a very strong issue to keep the beach safe. To get the support from the government for this project, Moyo is going to collect signatures from all of his customers who are going to visit his Warungs. Goodluck, Moyo!

dollar integrated tourism resort and casino on the same site. When asked about the latest proposal, the local community who attended the North Kirra Beach Rally were unanimously against GCOT’s new plan.“Our new mission is to protect the 38-kilometer Gold Coast coastal strip from South Stradbroke to Coolangatta, by having it declared as a World Surfing Reserve”, announced Andrew McKinnon, spokesperson for Save Our Southern Beaches Alliance. The surfing community wants to protect the beach and surfing amen-ity from commercial development on public beachfront land, just like the Peruvians did.World Champions Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson attended the North Kirra rally and backed the organizers call for a World Surfing Reserve on the Gold Coast coastal strip. “We need to protect our Coastline from these type of developments and not find in 10-15 years that we are fighting all over again”, added 2012 world surfing champion Joel Parkinson.

Cadiz is located in Southern Spain in Andalusia. It is a small town with old buildings on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. Some people believe that Hercules built this town. Most of the tourists come to Cadiz to see the Roma ruins, the impressive Cathedral and to know more about its interesting history. I felt like I had found a pearl in the edge of the old town because it turns out that the beautiful beaches in Cadiz are good for surfing throughout the year even in the winter. In the afternoon, I walked along Santa Maria Del Mar beach and I met some of the Cadiz surfing community, Alberto Lopez Rodriguez and Alberto Gallardo. According to them, you can surf anytime throughout the year but the best waves come around March until April. During wintertime in December waves at Del mar beach are around 1-2 metres in height and surfers needs to wear full body suits. There is another nice beach that is good for surfing as well in Los Canos. When I asked Alberto, where is the surf spot that he would most like to visit in the world? He responded with ‘Indone-sia’. That’s because he often watches surf videos

with Indonesia as the setting. He said that his favourite surfer is Mick Fanning. I was lucky enough to spend my afternoon with the Cadiz surfing community who were really friendly and welcoming. Our conversation finished up with the stunning sunset as golden light reflected in the Atlantic Ocean.

Mengapa Badung?

A Scrap of Note from Badung…It all began with a fad chitchat in one sunny afternoon, Magic Wave Surf Community Magazine and Conservation International (CI) Indonesia has been working together since mid 2013 with a rather ‘elaborate’ objective: to involve surfers, especially those of locals, as one of the stakeholders (which indeed is substantial!) in to the management of coastal area in the Regency of Badung, which cur-rently initiated by the local government. Why Badung? Well, besides this Regency is one of the most common surf destinations in Indonesia (with at least 25 surf spots ‘scattered’ across its coastline), Badung is also known as the ‘most advanced’ (or in other word: excessive development) area in Bali with a relatively established surf scene, particularly when compare to other areas in Bali, or even in Indonesia. As an activity which existence is dependence on the ‘availability’ of ‘service’(wave)providedby64kmofitscoastline(source:BadungDalam Angka, 2011), it is undeniable that one of the significant threats that may harm this activity and all its collateral impacts comes from development itself, especially coastal development. In the context of surfing, ‘unfriendly’ coastal developmentmay cause the disappearance of wave due to the shift of ecosystem function, or any other means in landscape changes: all for the sake of ‘development.’Throughout the last semester in 2013 and early 2014, Magic Wave with CI Indonesia have organized series of meetings with members of surfing communities, NGO(s), government representatives, and other stakeholders. The general response was quite well with inten-tion to support this collective effort. Another effort was to empha-size the importance of environmental state, especially in the

context of surfing, that came in to form through content inserted be-tween the sessions in surf competition for grommet initiated by Magic Wave.Another efforts to support the ‘dissemination of messages,’ came through a Surf Profile that is currently being composed by Magic Wave, while CI Indonesia initiated a surfonomics study regarding Uluwatu. An earlier study in 2012 stated that Uluwatu alone generated at least USD 8,4 millions per year (Margules, 2012). As for the later study (which is said to employ a more comprehensive data), according to ‘insider news,’ is said to generate a more ‘promising’ numbers, especially regarding the contribution made for the local economy.Besides those two worth-waiting-for documents, from the aforemen-tioned meetings pursed an idea to establish some sort of a ‘vessel’ for surfers and other surf-related stakeholders not only to communicate, but also to materialize any ideas for the sake of progress of Badung’s surf-related activities, which is of course expected to be applicable for other areas in Indonesia. Whatever the name of this ‘vessel’ would be, it should be able to facilitate aspirations of the stakeholders and to influence government policies that may have impacts –good or bad, to surfing. All the efforts done were inevitably far from perfection; there are lots of others things to be done to, at least, fulfill the expectation of the major-ity of the parties involved. But, one thing needs to be made clear here is that these efforts would be meaningless, unless you guys out there participate! For those of you interested to involve more, or perhaps to have a light chat about it, kindly contact us here at Magic Wave!

Why we will talk about Women in SurfingWhen you think of women and surfing, what do you think of? Probably Anastasia Ashley and her booty are coming to your mind. But surfing and women are more than just pretty bikini pictures. Since women can do at least everything that men can do, it is time to change the perspective on how the surfing world sees us, the women. Yes, we are pretty and adorable. But most of all, we have strong characters. We are sexy by being smart and we have the power! Since surfing and talking about it in magazines, newspapers and on television was for a long time dominated by men, now is the time for women to get the attention they deserve. It is not about a competition with men. It is about getting what we deserve! So lets show everybody what we are capable of—we can take off and we can be brave. Our bodies fit in the water and we have our own mindset. Since long time ago, women also sits in the line up and waiting for the sets to come—and now we will talk about it—because now it is our time to shine and to be recognized by the surf medias and the surf society. Therefore, Magic Wave will be the megaphone for all women who are wait-ing for that such opportunity. We are proud to have the best surfer girls on board and looking forward to let the public know about them in the next issues of Magic Wave. To get an impact this is the first reason why women should start to surf:

Feel freeIt is one thing that a woman knows it better, but sometimes problems will be in your way and you have to solve it. If you can surf a wave or even enjoy the feeling in the water, you as a girl or a grown women can be able to feel free. You do not need to be the wife who takes care of the family and you do not need to be the girl who scores in school—you just can be you. Whether you had a fight with your boyfriend, the dishes are waiting to wash, or you parents are still mad because you came back late that night. It is just you, the water and the wave for now. Just feel free and know that everything is possible!

Wah… Sering-sering deh bikin acara gini, biar nggak semakin banyak tagging-tagging nggak jelas yang merusak pemandangan kota Denpasar! Ditunggu gebrakan selanjutnya, Bro!

The Toxicity of SurfingUnintended Consequences of StokeAs surfing grows as a sport and as an industry, its impact on the environment grows as well. Surfing has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry that is com-pletely dependent on the environment, yet pays little attention to protecting it.Even for those looking to minimize their environmental impact, sustainable surfing products can be tough to find. Here are some of the facts; now it’s up to you to make the right decisions.20 Million Surfers WorldwideAlthough it is impossible to determine the exact number of surfers in the world, studies estimate between 17 and 23 million surfers worldwide.8 TimesIf all the surfers in the world lined up, they would span across the United States 8 times coast to coast.QuickFacts400.000 New surfboards made each year6Millionbarsofsurfwaxusedeachyear250 Tons wetsuit scraps each year60%Coralreefsthatarethreatened.Surfboards400.000 New surfboards made each yearDuringshaping,20%ofthefoamiswastedandendsupinlandfillsVolatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and dangerous isocyanates are found in Polyurethane blanks.Majority of fins and fin plugs are made from polyster resin and fiberglass or petro-leum based plastic.A shortboard weights about 5,3 lbs.

What if surfers could breathe underwater?Taking a three-wave hold-down will not be a problem, as “Triton” will give you the ability to breathe underwater somewhere in the future. The inventor of “Triton” calls it the oxygen respirator concept. South Ko-ran designer Jeabyun Yeon believes that, in the near future, his prototype will change our marine lifestyle.“’Triton’ allows us to breathe underwater for a long time, by simply biting it. It also does not require the skill of breathing in and out like a conventional respirator”, explains Yeon on his homepage.“It extracts oxygen underwater through a filter in the form of fine threads with holes smaller than water molecules. This is a technology developed by a Korean scientist”.“Using a very small but powerful micro compressor, it compresses oxygen and stores the extracted oxygen in storage tank. The micro com-pressor operates through micro battery, a next-generation technology 30 times smaller than current batteries”, he adds.“Triton” was inspired by James Bond’s re-breather and in Star Wars gear. If the prototype gets into production, surfers will be transformed into human fishes. Wipeouts won’t be a problem anymore. However, experts say that the new scuba mask concept would need to filter90litersofwaterperminute,inordertosupplyoxygenatnormalresting breathing rates.

The Sand Beach Bar and Restaurant

The sunset is one of the most beautiful things Bali has to offer, but with delicious food, it could not be any better. That is why you should visit The Sand Beach Bar and Restaurant. Little Hongkong Eating House

Little Hongkong is one of favorite Chinese restau-rants in Bali and it has some of the hardest working staffs I have seen with their servers and waiters constantly buzzing from table to table. The menu selection is awesome and each dish can feed two-to-three people, so if you bring a friend or a group it can be surprisingly cheap. All of the food is delicious, especially their roasted duck, their seafood and tofu claypot and their Chi-nese broccoli is also very good and works well with any entree. In addition, there are good varieties of vegetarian dishes, soups, salads and a great grill selection to satisfy all tastes.Open from 10 AM - 10 PM, Little Hongkong caters for birthdays or other function for large groups.Little Hongkong Eating HouseJl. Bali Green Surf 1st Anniversary: Games, Food and Fun CharityAt Saturday, May 3, 2014, the local Seminyak surf school “Bali Green Surf ” was host-ing an event to the cultural exchange between the locals and exchange students from the Udayana University to help the orphans. When the clouds were leaving in the early afternoon at Double Six beach, the event of the Bali Green Surf School began with a lot of fun and happiness. Everyone enjoyed German games such as Sackhüpfen, where the contestants were trying to reach the finish line in a sack or Eierlauf with a spoon plus a marble or an egg or another object is placed in the mouth while you need to walk to the other team members. Also locals and surf instructors showed the students from abroad, Indonesian games where a person try to pull the other person in their team on a palm tree leave. While this took place, the surf school also offered free surf class for everyone around the venue. The foreigners practiced the take-off together with local children and started to surf later in the white water. After all the physical exercise, the crowd was hungry and the ven-ue, The Sand Beach, served a traditional buffet with foods such as gado-gado, soup, cap cay and other vegetarian dishes during sunset. The perfect ending for a day full of joy and happiness of course was the relaxed atmo-sphere on the colorful bean bags, while a band was playing and the cocktails where leading the way to a day everyone will remember—with a smile on their face.

“Shaping a Surfboard is like feeling the shape of the body you adore”

When it is like Hafi, the famous Shaper from Kuta says, that shaping comes with the feeling for a certain body the shaper likes, than he knows how the body curves work and really loves someone special.Passionate Surfers shouldn’t miss the chance to visit his factory at Jalan Madiri 2 in Kuta. Let the master do the work on your customized Surfboard or just watch him and the other seven patient guys while shaping, painting or glassing. Hafis place with three rooms for shaping exists since seven years and is always evoling with new shapers who learn their abilities from the passionate ex-Beachboy. Hafi himself startet shaping Boards after the bombing in 2002 because their wasn’t much work to do anymore on the beach. To get to know him, you learn a lot as well about yourself, like I did. Hafi just comes to the factory when he is happy - because otheriwse he thinks the board he would shape while beeing in a bad mood wouldn’t float in the water. As I was curious about shaping, I asked him if he could introduce me in the art of shaping a surfboard. In the beginning Hafi maybe was kind of sceptical about me, how I was sitting in front of him with a skirt wanting to shape in a factory full of men but nevertheless he thought it would be a very good idea - if I wear something that can become dirty! I had not a problem at all with that I told him. ThusIdecidedtoshapeaFunboard(miniMalibu)withthesize:7,6x22x3,asmallRocker, round nose and rounded square tail. Hafi orderd the blank (8,0 foam blank with wood inside) which took 2 days to arrive.Onthefirstdayweshapedformorethan6hours.Inthebeginningheshowedmehow to mesure the size of the surfboard to draw the lines for the cut out of the board. The template helped to find the right positions for the nose and tail format I chose. After checking the outlines it was on me to cut out the board with a saw and I can tell I did it with a lot of sweat and fear that I would destroy the board in the beginning. It went well and Rafiq another great shaper gave me the advise always to double check the postion of the saw and not cut to narrow to the outlines. Even with great tips Hafi fixed the outlines I shaped to the really correct position. Now it was time to shape the thickness of the board with a grinding machine which really should be moved fast - how Hafi taught me. The real feeling for curves and shaping had to be relaesed in the shaping with always changing sandpaper. The light coming from the sides in the shaping room helped to see the shadows and the right place to shape a little bit more or less. In the end of the shaping process Hafi really introduced me to my heard, my sensitivity and my sensation. To be a real shaper you have to touch the board like a lover and feel all the slight differnces “in the body” of the board. And than shape it away with light sandpaper. What I really couldn’t do was the most important part of my board - which was shaping the rails. Hafi did that with a relaxed smile on his face and the intuition in his hands.

After finishing the shaping is was time to decide for the outward appearence also known as the colour of the board. When I was telling Hafi my idea of painting the whole bot-tom of the board myself with paintbrushes with an ethnic de-sign and than showed him the sketch - he just smiled. After two days, sixteen hours, a lot of coffee, a food allergy while painting and always nice company of Rafiq, who painted my hearts pink and fixed it with nice conversations and Alief who was facinated by the colours I used I finished my board in the middle of the third night. For what I was painting I finally got thumps up from Hafi and a compliments for my painting which really made myself smile all day long.At the last day the glassing with fiberglass was done. In the end all the workers in Hafis factory were proud of me and my work - and I was really proud myself as well. With the board I will hopefully ride for the rest of my life. And with the board their came eight really lovely people I got to know and will always visit when I have time. Hafi finally gave me the advise if I will continue to shape boards I should find a boyfriend at first so I can close my eyes and feel the shape of a body I love when I touch the board for the final shape. So I hope it will not be the last time shaping - just the beginning!“Membuat papan selancar itu seperti merasakan bentuk dari tubuh yang anda kagumi”

Trouble in ParadiseA place most surfers know and love for its per-fect waves peeling against picturesque beaches and tropical rainforest, Mentawai Islands, is currently under a threat by palm oil industry. Matt Hannon, who made a film entitled Trouble in Paradise, has put an incredible effort to share with us the thoughts of local people and what effects the communities would have from the palm oil industry and its deforestation cam-paign.

Matt Hannon posted the video with the follow-ing story:I was initially drawn to the Mentawai Archipel-ago by the lure of perfect waves peeling against picturesque beaches, rimmed by lush, tropical rainforest—although I was quick to discover that there is so much more to this special place than surfing.I ended up staying for quite a few years and working on a range of things, from surf guiding on charter boats and resorts to program design with SurfAid International, punctuated by periods of vagabonding about the simple villages and hidden reefs.

One of the first places I was lucky enough to stay was deep in the rainforests of Siberut Island, where I was introduced to the local community, as well as some of its animal inhabitants. I will never forget as a wide-eyed 22

year-old, watching in fear as one of the village women’s Malarial fever became so intense and convulsive, that the Sikerei (shamans) were called for from the neighboring village.ued as they made their way to the sick lady’s hut to sing, dance and heal.

The people of Mentawai, especially those of the traditional persuasion are easily the most welcoming, humbling and richest of com-munities I have come across in mytravels. I believe they (like many indigenous cultures) represent a time and a world that demands re-spect for the natural environment, community and balanced spirituality. Theirs is a paradigm long forsaken by the modern trappings of big cities and belligerent profit margins.

Information is not always easy to obtain, but to my knowledge many areas within Men-tawai have in 2014, managed to deter the palm oil companies, whilst other villages are still in negotiations. Other villages still have relinquished traditional titles of the land, and have consequently been locked into devel-opment concessions that render the land in question ‘State owned’.Latest articles from local Mentawai media can be found at: http://www.puailiggoubat.com/index.php?mod=berita&id=2417

that each year we can fund the necessary projects and continue paying for the costs of keeping Uluwatu clean. The magic of holding a benefit concert at such a unique and beautiful location like Uluwatu surf villas truly inspired everyone.” A short 10 minute professionally edited video of the event can be seen here: www.vimeo.com/uluwatusurfvillas/xavierrudd Doors opened under sunny skies at 4pm, with many heeding the call to come early and enjoy the cliff-top view of Uluwatu’s peeling waves, along with opening musicians DJ Loch and Dustin Thomas. The event stage was placed at the lower section of the property, with the expansive lawns, tradi-tional wooden villas and pool terraces rising above forming a natural amphitheater with ample space for all visitors. Framed by a sky awash in the colors of the setting sun, Xavier Rudd took to the stage and played for over two hours for a high spirited and engaged crowd. The Australian artist, surfer and environmentalist commented:“The show we played at Uluwatu surf villas for Project Clean Uluwatu was full power ocean church. A special gathering of earthly folks at sundown, paying respect to our oceans and country. I was super inspired by the action plan in place by Project Clean Uluwatu. I see a lot of great ideas on my travels, but unfortunately more often than not things don’t translate into action. I’m so impressed by these guys and their dedication and hard work towards keeping our beautiful earth sacred and clean and was proud to be able to join forces. One love, one mob, one direction for change!”The night proved to be a gathering of like-minded and environmentally-conscious people — a landmark event for Uluwatu. PCU manager Curtis Lowe and co-founder Ollie Crowell were thankful. “We’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of support we’ve received,” said Lowe. “I don’t think we’ve ever seen so many happy and positive people together in one place before. This was an amazing experience.”After two encore songs to a frenetic all-ages dance pit, the successful night wound down under a bright star-filled sky and many headed to Single Fin bar for the official after party. Single Fin and Project Clean Uluwatu will be hosting movie nights every Friday beginning April 11th.
