THE WITTY BETAWI ICON

Few artists can write songs that are both witty and musically commendable as Benyamin, as shown by the lines above taken from one of his songs, “Superman” Even fewer can perform in music as well as in movies as he did.

Benyamin Sueb was born in Jakarta on March 5, 1939, to an underprivileged family. Little Benyamin learnt to earn a living as early as three years old by singing around his village.

Having had a struggle during his younger years, being a bus conductor and bread vendor were two jobs he had done before teaming up with his friends to form a pop band and sing in night clubs. In the 1960’s, when the government banned pop, he had to switch to singing gambang kromong, a form of Betawi music. This led to a real break for Benyamin, who later in 1970 got a chance to record duets with the famous pop singer Ida Royani on a Gambang Kromong album. Benyamin was one of the singers to popularize Betawi traditional music, and he did it with flair. It wasn’t the lyrics of his songs so much as the way he performed them that had made his songs everlasting. One can’t help but grin while listening ti his hilarious rendering of “Dipatil Ikan Sembilang” or his duet with Ida Royani in “Di Sini Aje” Even those who didn’t understand the Betawi language would laugh whenever he performed on stage. His songs have a mix of musical influences; from pop, rock to disco. Many hilarious, some serious, they reflect the Betawi culture and social conditions in his time.

Benyamin then went on to films, starring in 53 movies and several TV series during his lifetime-among others, Banteng Betawi, Samson Betawi, and Si DoelAnak Sekolahan. Even in movies, Benyamin upheld his Betawi roots. His talent in this field was indisputable, as proven by the Citra Awards he won for Intan Berduri (1973) and Si Doel Anak Modern (1974).

Indonesia lost a true artist and entertainer when he passed away on September 5, 1995.

There is a new hotel in my city. It is a four star hotel.It is located downtown.The hotel is not very big but the architecture is very beautiful. It looks like a

classic castle in Europe. According to the brochure, it has 100 rooms, a fancy restaurant, complete sports facilities including a swimming pool, tennis court, gym and sauna, there are also a coffee shop and a karaoke room .

The pictures of the rooms in the brochure are very nice. The rooms look very comfortable. It they contain a big spring bed with big pillows, a nice sofa, a wardrobe and a television system with programmes from all over the world. The bathroom is very beautiful although it is not very big. It has a bath-tub with hot and cold water so guests can bath in it comfortably.

The brochure says "Hospitality is our trademark." The staffs of that hotel, from the receptionists, housekeepers, and bellboys are trained to be polite and to help guests in any way they can.

Candy ApplesYou need: 6 sweet apples, 6 wooden sticks, 225 gr sugar, 110 ml oz water, 10 gr butter, 2 tea spoon golden syrup, 1/4 tea spoon vanilla extract

Step: Firstly press the wooden sticks into the end of the apple with the stalk/sticks. Second, pour the water and sugar into a heavy pan, and apply a gentle heat. Add butter, golden syrup and vanilla then bring to the boil, do not stir until the

mixture is all formed together (if the mixture has formed together, swirling the pan is ok).

Remove the pan from the heat and dip your apple into the mixture and then rest them with the stick on a plate for 7 minutes.

Now, put them in the fridge and they will take around 1/2 hour to go hard.

in vain.

Finally, Roro agreed to marry Bandung, but on one condition: Bandung

had to build her a big wonderful palace with one thousand statues in it. Also,

the task must be completed before the sun rose. Bandung agreed, he was so

Bandung immediately called his invisible friends for help. They did what

their master ordered. The work had started and it seemed the palace would be

soon completed before dawn. Knowing it, Roro was worried. “What can I do?”

Roro thought in panic. Suddenly, she had an idea. She awoke her maids and

nannies, then asked them to do their daily routines as if morning had come.

They also made shadow as if there was a sun in the sky.

Bandung was stunned. The sky looked red, the roosters started crowing,

and the people pounded rice. Meanwhile, the job had not been finished yet.

The evil spirits disappeared because they were scared of light. They hurriedly

left Bandung worked to build his palace and temples alone.

When Bandung realized that Roro had used tricks, he was very angry. He

then cursed her. He turned her into a stone, which completed the palace and

temples. Even today, the statue of Roro Jonggrang remains in the temple.

Rafflesia Arnoldi is known as the largest flower in the world. It weighs about 7 kilograms (15 pounds). Its petal grows to 0.5 meters long and 2.5 centimeters thick. Rafflesia has no stem, no roots, and no leaves. It is parasitic, meaning in usually lives in another plant. This flower is named after Sir Stamford Raffles who found it in 1818.

Raflesia Arnoldi can only bloom once a year. It blooms only one week before it dies. Raflesia Arnoldi is also called the “corpse flower” because it has a very bad smell, like rotten meat. This giant flower has five wide orange petals (with white dots) surrounding a cup.

Raflesia Arnoldi can be found in Sumatera Island, especially in Bengkulu. The government in Bengkulu province has been trying hard to conserve this rare flower because its number is getting smaller and smaller. The government is afraid if they do not do anything to protect this flower, it may become extinct. The cause of the decreasing number of Raflesia Arnoldi is mainly human. What is an iceberg?

An iceberg is a great of ice floating in the sea. “Berg” is the German word for “mountain”. In the parts of the earth, around the North and South poles, land and sea are both covered by layers of ice, more than 300 meters deep at the centre.

Tongues of ice, called glaciers, stretch out into the open sea. The sea water melts the bottom parts of these glaciers, and then the top part moves into the water with a great noise.
