1840s

Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Westward Migration:

One of the first chapter book series I remember reading was Little House on the Prairie--and it was a true story! I read Laura, played Laura, and even made my Mom sew me a bonnet. Which I wore in public on occasion.

1833

Horace Mann’s Reforms:

Mann was the creator of universal free public schools, called common schools. Because of this reform program, I have professional training requirements and teach all students in my community. I also met Mr. Kromer at a teachers’ meeting.

1870s

Oberlin College Created:

The reforming spirit of the early 19th century led to the creation of utopian Oberlin, a place of “learning and labor” that combined the idea of manual labor to help your college with devoted study. A great place to enhance my already great nerdiness.

1970s

Sunshine Family Dolls:

Only the 70s could see the rise of an anti-Barbie family of hippie dolls noted for their wholesome nuclear family unity. To this day, I and my daughter disdain all things false and Barbie like.

1916

National Parks Created:

The preservation idea led to the creation of parks of awesome beauty set aside for all to enjoy. We camped in NPs during vacations all through my childhood and I will do the same this summer with my own children.

Eastern European Migration:

Most of my great grandparents migrated to the US in order to escape poverty and autocratic rule. Their stories sparked my interest in history.
