Week 1:Performing Robotics Series of movie clips are looped, and pictures of the audiences, who are either passing by the screen or standing in front of the screen, are taken every 1 minute and overlapped on the screen. This “robot” express anger at the audiences who stand in front of the screen and put the audiences in the scene of anger. That way, audiences become victim of the anger and the silent witness of the scene at the same time.

Expending the previous project, I wanted to make screen reacts to audiences instead of audiences react to the screen. First concept was to make screen detect the emotion and show the clips correspond to the emotion. However, the face detection programs are extremely expensive and it was impossible to build a new code because I did not have any coding experience. I decided to replace emotion detection with buttons. Further improvement might include the face detection function. In this project, camera detects people’s face, not emotion, and the faces are changed into images that correspond to the buttons that people pushed. Each button represent different range of age from baby to old age. Everyone has some kind of nostalgia or imagination in their mind. This project was design to help people imagine or look back when they want to. Buttons are placed in a box that looks like a music box or a jewelry box. Acknowledgement I did this project with a POSTECH student Yeongho Kwon. He helped me a lot to actualize the imagination.

Week 2:Designing a Relationship with an Everyday Object

Ball pen was used to draw the bottom part. The surface of the pen plotter was not very smooth and the pen tip is very sensitive to the speed and surface, so the pen did not touch the paper occasionally. Top part was drawn with blue felt pen.

Gray and purple felt pen was used. Felt pens are more stable than ball pen, so color was expressed fully.

Line and dot is the basic elements of drawing. Pen plotter is very classic and great machine to create drawings with lines and dots. Both drawings does not really recalls land scape, but the first intention was to reproduce a landscape picture. Then, I selected two elements, lights and clouds, and expressed those two elements with lines and dots. Horizontal layers of clouds were drawn with lines and radiating lights were drawn with dots. Parts that clouds and lights meet was drawn with dash lines. Computer language called python was used to code and the code changed into hpgl format so pen plotter can read the code and plot.

Week 3:Machined Lines, Coded Lines, Drawn Lines

This short film is based on my imagination. As most people do, I think house is a representation of myself, and at the same time, it is the only place that I can be fully safe and comfortable. When I want to escape from boring life, I hope to fly away with my house. As camera rotating, it shows that the camera is still inside of a room. This indicates that there is a limit even though I want freedom. At the end of film, camera comes back where it was before it took off. This shows that I know that I need to come back where I am wherever I want to go.

In my favorite movie “UP,” an old man and a guy travel in a flying house. This apparatus was inspired by the film. This apparatus goes up and down, swing, and rotate. I pick a window out of all the elements of house. Window frame works as a filter and make people who are watching this film feel like they are in a house. Paper city was built to make this clip after exploring the apparatus few hours.
