PORTFOLIO HANNA PIKSARV

Page 3: Hanna Piksarv

My practice is based on time-honoured and repetitive, even blunt work. My pieces often find a form of an odd everyday object or remain visible as only mark left behind of an activity. In my works I am measuring the limits of my physical body as well as my span of memory.

EXCELLENCE IN EBENSEE2015

Festival der Regionenexhibition, performance-tour

In collaboration with Fabian Faltin, Johann Reißer and Zuzana Gallikova, we explored the handicraft tradition in Salzkammergut, focusing on the Ebensee cross-stitch technique. Extremely difficult and time-consuming cross-stitch is practiced until today, mainly by women, in spite of its marginal position amongst other local traditional practices. Our research based on our relationship to several local stitchers, from whom we learned the craft, the value and the purpose of this activity. It can play different roles in the everyday life of a stitcher, it can work as a meditation, prayer or creative hobby, form to express affection or to earn extra money. Our project sought for new ways to exhibit cross-stitch works and raised the question where do these precious hand made works position in the environment where value is measured monetarily.

HEA JA HALG/WOOD AND GOOD

exhibition in Tartu Art House 23.10.-16.11. 2014

More and more I am beginning to sense my limits. My energy and strength gets a spatial dimension in my work. The materials seen at the exhibition are such that I can work with without using extra help. An important component, almost a material in itself aside from wood and lead is work. Work done with my hands is what creates a change in me, gives the work of art its body and significance when confronting the viewer.Exhibition consisted of two installations - Caressed Logs and My Luck.

MINU ÕNN / MY LUCK2014

61 kg of lead

I casted my own bodyweight of lead on the floor of a gallery. It is an Estonian tradition to pour small amount of lead into water in New Years Eve in order to conjure luck and predict future by translating the form of casted lead into upcoming events.

OTHER ARTWORKS BASED ON PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

NOVEMBER - MAI/NOVEMBER - MAY2015

physical activity, brushwood

Collecting sticks and twigs in the forest is an activity I find invigorating. Perhaps it is due to the moderate physical exertion, clear result of the activity or the natural scenery. I often experience natural environment as an artwork – I find fascinating objects and inspiring installations there with my urban eyes. But it is impossible to recreate those phenomenons in exhibition space without losing their impact. My collection of bundles will work only as a reference to the time and effort spent in woods.

ÜRITASIN TASAKAALU HOIDA, KUNI HELISTAS MULLE MU EMA / I TRIED TO FIND BALANCE UNTIL MY MOTHERCALLED ME2013

graphite, firebricks, plywood postaments

I don´t have good balance, so I decided totrain myself in order to feel more stable in myeveryday life. I stood on a block of stones so thatI can hardly reach to the ceiling with graphitebetween my fingers. I drew lines in order to keepmyself up. There was a round mark left behind ofmy action. I was there trying to balance myselfuntil my mothers call interrupted my activity. She calls me every day. Sometimes on the noon, sometimes later and sometimes not at all.Second time I exhibited this work, I used plywoodpostaments to climb up to the six meter highceiling. Raja gallery

111 km2012

physical action, graphite on a wall

I converted the distance between Tallinn and my summerhouse into a 111 km long line. I drew the line with a graphite stick on a six meter long wall walking back and forth. Always on a stressful time I get the longing for my summerhouse. I start to miss the peaceful and balanced state of mind I enter while being there. I do not have enough time to be there as much as I would like to, I have to stay in Tallinn and make art. But making this piece, I did not have to run away to countryside, I escaped into work.

RITTERILE / FOR RITTER2012

graphite on paper, photo30X20cm, 16lk

This work was born from the situation I was in spring 2012. I had a plan to work as an assistant for Austrian artist Georg Ritter. He and his work work was completely unknown for me. All that I knew about him was that he is doing gigantic realistic drawings. What is the background of these images and what motivates him to work is mystery for me. I also enjoy drawing, but I have had hard time to convince myself to depict anything and I have not found a way to use drawing in my artwork. To find a common ground with my future mentor I did this work. I searched out all the pencils I had, sharpened them and drew them all til the end into a notebook.

Unlimited edition of candles shaped as four churches in Linz and four Estonian churches. Churchcandles have been exhibited as a large room installation as well as separately, but I really like when these candles find their way to peoples homes, where they han offer private ritual. It stays up to the viewer whether by burning a church-shaped candle, one glorifies the church or depreciates it.

MAJAMEDALID / HOUSES2011

lead~ 5 x 5 x 1 cm

These are series of medals I made for my friendsand family about important houses in their lives.Medal art has some qualities that I value in artin general. By fitting in palm, medals can reachvery close to a person. Also, medals are usuallyaddressed to someone, they have clear audience. In this work, medals keep memory of a housethat has been important in some point in theirlife, but has moved on the background. Leadgives a small item suprisingly heavy weight.
