Verde River

• Middle Verde River (Verde Valley)– Historic Irrigation

• Some of the oldest historic water uses in the Gila River System– Earliest: 1865 Pioneer Ditch on West Clear Creek– Ft. Lincoln (Camp Verde) built to protect settlers of the Verde Valley– By late 1800’s agriculture becomes central to the Verde Valley economy

• Most existing irrigation diversions were built during late 1800’s and early 1900’s– Approximately 30 ditches divert water from Verde River and tributaries– Diversion structures are non‐permanent and require frequent repair

Verde River• Verde Valley ‐ Large Irrigation Ditch Organizations

– Irrigation practices changed little during in the last century– Water management has been unstructured and not well documented– Some ditches are well organized, some loosely formed and managed– Some water users have irrigated lands beyond what was historically

irrigated – 30 Irrigation ditches

• Total estimated acres served: 4,700 ‐ 5,000 acres• Total number of irrigation water users: 1,300

– U.S. Geological Survey Study (2013)• Study showed that baseflow at the upstream end of the study area is 4,900 AF per year less than it was in 1910 as a result of human stresses

• Study showed that baseflow at the downstream end of the Verde Valley in 2005 is now 10,000 AF per year less than it was in 1910 as a result of human stresses

• For 2005 – 2110 the model shows an additional decrease between 5,400 and 8,600 AFY because of past, ongoing and future stresses

– conservative estimates of future pumping

• Human stresses due to water pumping was the reason for these stream flow depletions
