Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 to a Hindu Modh Baniya family in Porbandar (also known as Sudamapuri), a coastal town on the Kathiawar Peninsula and then part of the small princely state of Porbandar in the Kathiawar Agency of the Indian Empire.

October 1880 he sat the entrance examinations fo r Ka t h i a w a r H i g h School, also in Rajkot. He passed the examinations with a creditable average of 64 percent and was enrolled the following year.

In May 1883, the 13-year-o l d M o h a n d a s w a s married to 14-year-old Ka s t u r b a i M a k h a n j i Kapadia (her first name was usually shortened to " K a s t u r b a " , a n d affectionately to "Ba") in a n a r r a n g e d c h i l d marriage, according to the custom of the region at that time.
