Home Security is an essential aspect of every homeowner’s life. There should be no

compromise on home security. This is where door locks play a significant role. There are

seven different types of door locks, with each of them having different characteristics.

This article will go through the different types of door locks and which are better for your

specific requirements.

Types of door locks

1. Doorknob lock

A doorknob lock is mainly used for internal doors of the house. It has knobs on both sides

of the door. It can be a single cylinder or a double cylinder.

A key operates a single-cylinder doorknob from outside. On the inside, it has a button that

you can use to lock the door from inside. A key can unlock it from the outside.

A key operates the double cylinder doorknob from both sides. It does not have a button.

As mentioned above, it is mainly used indoors because it can not withstand much force. A

hammer or something heavy can easily break it.

2. Handle Lock

The most common residential lock is the handle lock. It usually has a handle on both sides

of the door. The handle opens the door by pulling the bolt back. It also has a lock cylinder

for a key. You can use the key to lock and unlock the door. Some handle locks have the

Apartment entry doors use this lock mostly. It is set up on the door and can have a handle

or a knob on one side of the door. This lock reduces the chances of forced entry as it is

nearly impossible to break. Moreover, it provides an additional layer of security by

extending the bolt into the doorframe more than one inch. This is why a burglar can not

unlock it by applying force. It can withstand the force applied to break it.

Single Cylinder deadbolt locks have a handle or a knob on the inside of the door. On the

outside, it only has a lock for the key.

Double Cylinder deadbolt locks do not have handles or knobs. It only has a lock which

only opens with the key, which is why it is safer than a single cylinder deadbolt lock.

Consequently, lost keys can be a big problem in deadbolt locks. You can not break it

easily, and you will have to contact the Lockout service in Melrose park for access.

4. smart lock

Smart locks combine security with technology. It connects to WiFi or a Bluetooth device.

A smartphone can control the lock after establishing a connection. The smartphone uses

an application that connects to the lock through WiFi. You can directly connect the lock to

the phone through Bluetooth.

These locks use different sensors. The biggest advantage it offers is that you do not need a

key for a smart lock, which means no lost keys. In addition, the lock resists force or

pressure as it is made of high-grade metal or steel. However, there is a possibility that

hackers can hack a smart lock, but it isn’t very likely. On the other hand, Smart locks are

much more expensive when in comparison with other locks.

A padlock is one of the most common locks for protecting valuables. It is a portable lock

that passes through an opening. It provides the least amount of resistance to pressure.

things of high value. Brass and bronze padlocks have high tensile strength and are not

easy to break into them. Padlocks come with a key or a combination. In conclusion,

Residential Locksmith in Melrose Park does not recommend it for home security.

6. chain lock

Chain locks are also mainly used in apartment entry doors. They are installed on the

inside of the door. It is not visible from the outside. It is a secondary lock that should have

a primary lock. The chain allows the homeowner to open the door slightly without risking

home security. It has a slider on the door frame. You have to remove the chain from the

slider to open the door.

7. Sliding Bolt Lock

A sliding bolt lock is installed on the inside of the door. You can not unlock it from the

outside. It has two main parts:

One is installed on the door and the other on the door frame. The bolt slides into the latch

and locks the door from inside. To unlock the door, you will have to slide back the bolt.
