Kegiatan ELDP

• Saat ini ~7000 bahasa daerah di seluruh dunia• Setengah sudah terancam punah, dan akan punah pada

akhir abad ini• Banyak bahasa yang belum direkam, belum didokumentasi• Linguistic Diversity akan dikurangi• Pada 2002 tahun lalu SOAS diterima dana dari Arcadia

•mendukung dokumentasi bahasa yang terancam punah•mendorong kerja lapangan pada bahasa yang terancam

punah, terutama oleh sarjana muda dan penutur yang mendokumentasi bahasa sendiri•membuat arsip bahasa yang terdiri dari rekaman sama

transkrip (ELAN) sebagai sumber daya ilmu bahasa, ilmu pengatahun sosial, dan untuk penutur-penutur sendiri

• Language documentation (Himmelmann 1998, Woodbury 2003)• Songs with a linguistic component• Ethnobotanical documentation (interdisciplinary)• Ritual speech events (e.g., religious chanting,

ceremonies…)

Grant types

• Small Grants (SG): up to 1 year, max £10.000

• Individual Graduate Scholarships (IGS): up to 3 years

• Individual Post-doctoral Fellowships (IPF): up to 2 years

•Major Documentation Project (MDP): up to 3 years; maximum amount of funding £150.000 (may increase)

• Demonstrate your knowledge by being as concrete as possible• Argue for why this project is important now• Endangerment – not just number of speakers but also

what factors are threatening the language• Language versus dialect• Other work on the language – don’t ignore existing work,

even if you think it is insufficient
