Here's the photo I'll be starting with:

     The original image.

Here's what the image will look like after adding a double rainbow:

  • 8/20/2019 efek pelangi

    2/33

     The nal rainbow eect.

    Let's get started!

Step 1: Add A New Blank Layer

ith the image newl opened in "hotoshop# if we look in the Laers panel# we see that

we currentl ha$e one laer# the %ackground laer# which contains our image:

The photo sits on the %ackground laer in the Laers panel.

  • 8/20/2019 efek pelangi

    3/33

The rst thing we need to do is add a new blank laer abo$e the %ackground laer. To

do that# click on the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Laers panel:

&lick on the ew Laer icon.

"hotoshop adds a new blank laer named (Laer )( abo$e the %ackground laer.

*ouble+click directl on the name of the laer and change it to (,ainbow(# since we'll be

adding our initial rainbow to this laer. "ress Enter -in /Return -0ac when ou're

done to accept the name change:

    ,ename the new laer (,ainbow(.

Step 2: Select The Rainbow Gradient

1s I mentioned# "hotoshop ships with a read+made rainbow gradient for us to use. It's

not one of the gradients that "hotoshop makes a$ailable to us b default# but all we

need to do is load it in manuall. To do that# select theGradient Tool from the Tools

    panel:

  • 8/20/2019 efek pelangi

    4/33

    2elect the 3radient Tool.

Then# with the 3radient Tool selected# click on the Gradient Picker in the 4ptions %ar

at the top of the screen:

    &lick on the 3radient "icker in the 4ptions %ar.

This opens "hotoshop's Gradient Editor which shows us small thumbnails of the

gradients we can choose from. % default# the rainbow gradient isn't one of them# so

let's load it in. &lick on the riht!pointin arrow in the top right of the 3radient 5ditor:

    &lick on the small arrow.

1 list of additional gradient sets appears. The one we want is Special E"ect#. 2elect it

    from the list:

  • 8/20/2019 efek pelangi

    5/33

    2elect the (2pecial 5ects( gradients.

"hotoshop will ask ou if ou want to replace the original gradients with the 2pecial

5ects gradients or simpl append them to the bottom of the list. &lick Append so

ou'll still ha$e the original gradients a$ailable# and the new 2pecial 5ects ones will be

    added below them:

&lick (1ppend( to add the new (2pecial 5ects( gradients in with the original gradients.

ith the new 2pecial 5ects gradients added# the one we want + Ru##ell$# Rainbow +

is the last one at the bottom. If ou ha$e "hotoshop's Tool Tips enabled in the

    "references -the're enabled b default# ou'll see the name (,ussell's ,ainbow(

appear when ou ho$er our mouse o$er the gradient's thumbnail. &lick on the

thumbnail to select the gradient# then click 46 to e7it out of the 3radient 5ditor:

  • 8/20/2019 efek pelangi

    6/33

&lick on the (,ussell's ,ainbow( thumbnail to select the gradient.

    Step %: Select &Radial Gradient& 'ro( The )ption# Bar

To make the rainbow gradient appear as an arc when we draw it# go back up to the

4ptions %ar at the top of the screen and click on the Radial Gradient option:

    2elect (,adial( from the 4ptions %ar.

Step *: +ra )ut A Rainbow ,ith The Gradient Tool

To add the rainbow colors to the image# all we need to do is drag out a gradient. I want

m rainbow to appear as if it's touching the ground behind the group of trees on the left

of m photo and then arching high abo$e the larger tree on the right. To do that# I'll

position m mouse almost at the edge of the photo near the bottom right corner# in line

hori8ontall with the bottom of the trees on the left. I'll click on that spot to set the

starting point for m gradient# and with m mouse button still held down# I'll drag all the

wa across the image to a point 9ust beond the left of the trees. Holding m Shi-t ke

down as I drag will limit the direction I can drag in# making it eas to drag hori8ontall:

  • 8/20/2019 efek pelangi

*ragging out a radial rainbow gradient from right to left in the image.

hen ou release our mouse button# "hotoshop draws the rainbow gradient. It doesn't

    look terribl realistic 9ust et# but it's a start:

Step : Apply The Gau##ian Blur 'ilter

Let's blur the colors of the rainbow together so it looks more realistic. 3o up to

the 'ilter menu in the 0enu %ar at the top of the screen# choose Blur# then

    choose Gau##ian Blur:

    3o to ilter ; %lur ; 3aussian %lur.

  • 8/20/2019 efek pelangi

    10/33

This opens "hotoshop's 3aussian %lur dialog bo7. *rag the Radiu# slider at the bottom

of the dialog bo7 towards the right to increase the amount of blurring being applied to

the rainbow# keeping an ee on the image as ou drag the slider so ou can see a

pre$iew of what's happening. &ontinue dragging the slider to the right until the

transitions between the colors look more soft and natural. The actual ,adius $alue ouend up choosing will depend a lot on the si8e and resolution of our image. or me# a

$alue of around . pi3el# works well. &lick 46 when ou're done to close out of the

    dialog bo7:

*rag the ,adius slider to soften the color transitions in the rainbow.

    Here's m image after appling the 3aussian %lur lter:

The rainbow now looks more realistic after appling the 3aussian %lur lter.

    Step 4: Add A Layer 0a#k

&lick on the Layer 0a#k  icon at the bottom of the Laers panel:

    &lick the Laer 0ask icon.

  • 8/20/2019 efek pelangi

    12/33

othing will happen et in the document window# but "hotoshop adds a laer mask

thumbnail to the right of the main pre$iew thumbnail on the ,ainbow laer. If ou look

closel# ou'll see a white highlight bo7 appearing around the laer mask's thumbnail.

This tells us that the mask# not the laer itself# is selected:

The laer mask thumbnail tells us that a mask has been added.

Step 5: /hoo#e The Black To ,hite Gradient

    ith the 3radient Tool still selected# riht!click  -in / /ontrol!click  -0ac anwhere

  • 8/20/2019 efek pelangi

    13/33

    Step 1: +ra A Black To ,hite Gradient )n The Layer 0a#k

1 real rainbow would usuall appear to get brighter as it reaches higher into the sk# so

we're going to gi$e our "hotoshopped rainbow that same eect b dragging a black to

white gradient from the base of the rainbow -the point where the rainbow and the

ground should meet to the top of the image. To do that# with m 3radient Tool selected#I'll click m mouse somewhere along the bottom of the trees on the left. Then# with m

mouse button still held down# I'll hold down m Shi-t ke as well and drag straight up to

the top of the image. Holding down 2hift makes it eas to drag in a $ertical direction:

*rag a black to white gradient from the base of the rainbow to the top of the image.

    hen I release m mouse button# "hotoshop draws the black+to+white gradient. 2ince

the gradient was drawn on the laer mask# not on the laer itself# we don't see the

actual gradient in the image. Instead# the rainbow now appears to start near the bottom

of the trees on the left and gets brighter as it reaches higher into the sk:

  • 8/20/2019 efek pelangi

    14/33

The rainbow no longer e7tends all the wa to the bottom of the photo thanks to the laer mask.

    Step 11: +uplicate The Rainbow Layer To 7ncrea#e 7t#Brihtne##

To increase the brightness of the rainbow# simpl

press /trl89 -in / /o((and89 -0ac to duplicate the laer. If# after duplicating the

laer# ou nd the rainbow is now too bright# dial it back a few notches b lowering the

opacit of the duplicated laer. =ou'll nd the )pacity option directl across from the

blend mode option at the top of the Laers panel. I'm going to lower mine down to

    around >?@:

  • 8/20/2019 efek pelangi

    15/33

"ress (&trlAB( -in / (&ommandAB( -0ac to duplicate the rainbow laer# then lower the new laer's

    opacit as needed.

Here's m image after duplicating m rainbow laer and then lowering the opacit:

     The rainbow now appears brighter.

  • 8/20/2019 efek pelangi

    16/33

Step 12: Group The Two Rainbow Layer#

Let's do a little housekeeping in the Laers panel b grouping the two rainbow laers

together. 3rouping related laers makes it easier to keep the Laers panel organi8ed.

ith the top laer selected# hold down our Shi-t ke and click on the original ,ainbow

laer directl below it to select both laers at once. =ou'll see them both highlighted inblue# letting ou know the're both selected:

    2elect both rainbow laers.

Then go up to the Layer menu at the top of the screen and choose Group Layer#:

    3o to Laer ; 3roup Laers.

"hotoshop will group the two laers together in the Laers panel. "hotoshop names the

new group (3roup )(. % default# the laer group will be closed# pre$enting us from

seeing the two laers inside of it# which is ne for now:

  • 8/20/2019 efek pelangi

    17/33

The two rainbow laers are now inside (3roup )(.

Step 1%: Add A New Blank Layer

e ha$e our initial rainbow. ow let's add a second one to create a double rainboweect! irst# we'll need a new laer# so click once again on the New Layer icon at the

gradient. ith the 3radient 5ditor still open# click on theblue color #top directl below

the gradient pre$iew bar and drag it towards the left. Then do the same thing with

the reen and yellow color #top## dragging them towards the left. It doesn't matterhow far ou drag them as long as there's some space between them. This is 9ust to

make sure the don't o$erlap each other as we reposition them. Lea$e the red color

    stop in place:

*rag the blue# green and ellow color stops towards the left 9ust to spread them out temporaril.

&lick on the red color #top to select it# then enter a $alue of 52 into

Then I'll drag out a rainbow gradient 9ust as I did back in 2tep G: irst# I need to re+selectthe Radial Gradientoption in the 4ptions %ar so the gradient will appear as an arc:

2elect the ,adial 3radient option again.

Then I'll click and drag out m second rainbow in the same location as the rst one:

  • 8/20/2019 efek pelangi

    23/33

*ragging out a second rainbow gradient in the same spot.

hen I release m mouse button# "hotoshop draws the gradient# looking $er much like

    26/33

The rainbow once again appears more realistic after blurring the colors.

Step 16: /opy The Layer 0a#k )nto The Second RainbowLayer

e need to add a laer mask at this point and draw a black to white linear gradient on

the mask to hide the the rainbow below the point where it should be touching the

ground and ha$e it appear to increase in brightness as it reaches further into the sk#

9ust as we did back in 2teps >+)? with the original rainbow. %ut wh go through all that

hassle again when we can 9ust cop one of the laer masks we'$e alread created onto

the second rainbow's laer! To do that# I'll rst need to open m laer group b clicking

on the small triangle to the left of the group's name:

    the second rainbow's laer:

  • 8/20/2019 efek pelangi

    28/33

The laer mask has been copied from one laer to another.

If we look at the image in the document window# we see that the bottom of the rainbow

now fades out 9ust abo$e the trees# 9ust like the original rainbow:
