1-2 How to Use This Manual
This manual describes the following points.
1) Replacement of parts :
The parts must be replaced by units (electrical, mechanical and optical units).
2) Replacement procedure of parts :Necessary disassembly procedures and adjustments after replacement are shown with illustrations and
flow charts.
Don't perform repairs with other parts, units or methods (procedures, tools or others) except those mentioned
in the manual and parts list. An unallowable repair not only hinders a normal repair work but also causes
another trouble.

2-2 Display
DisplayThe display uses a dot matrix LCD which has 4 lines and 20 characters per line. In general, the upper three
lines display measured data, and the button line displays the soft key function which changes with the mea-
suring mode. Contrast and Illumination
The contrast and illumination of diplay window are adjusted, see Chapter 6 SPECIAL MODE (Menu
Mode) or section 1.5 Star key mode.
Heater (Automatic)
The built-in automatic heater functions when the temperature is below 0C. This keeps the displays speed
up at temperatures lower than 0C. To set the heater ON/OFF, see section 6.4.6 Heater ON/OFF. The
operating time will become short if a heater is used.

2-6 Serial signal RS-232C connector
The serial signal connector is used for connecting the GTS-100N series with a computer or TOPCON Data
Collector, which enables the computer to receive measured data from the GTS-100N series or to send pre-
set data of horizontal angle, etc. to it.
The following data will be output at each mode.
The display and the output at the coarse mode are the same as the contents above.
Output at the tracking mode is displayed as distance data only.
The details necessary for the connection with the GTS-100N Series are obtained from its Interface Manual
which is optionally available. Please refer to the manual.

3. PRINCIPLE
3-1 Principle of Angular Measurement
(1) Principle
The pattern of the scale is divided into 1260 lines of equal pitch. The line width of the signal "R" is stable.
The line width of the signals "A", "B" and "C" is modulated according to the different cycles. (Fig. 1)The signals are arranged in the order of "R" , "A", "B" and "C". When the pattern of the scale is projected,
the waveform is generated on the CCD. (Fig. 2) Obtain an integral value by every four waveform lines and
find out the line whose change is the smallest. It is "R" because the "R" width is stable. When you have found
out "R", the next is "A" and then "B" and "C" . Therefore the frequency of "A", "B" and "C" can be obtained.
(Fig. 3)
First, carry out Fourier transformation (DFT) for the equal-pitch signals to execute the accurate calculation of
1 pitch (1028 seconds) or less. Secondly, arrange the waveforms of the frequency for the "A", "B" and "C", obtain
each phase and, by combining the phases, obtain the angle of the block including "A", "B" and "C". Thirdly, obtain
the angle of the pitch unit by using the kind of the pattern including the reference position. Finally, combine
the accurate and rough calculations and arrange the digits to obtain the angular measurement value.

3-2 Principle of Distance Measurement
(1) Principle
Light is emitted to the corner cubes placed on the ground being measured. The amount of the light delay
between the instrument and corner cube can be measured from the reflected light and this value is converted
to distance.Topcon EDMs modulate light at the four frequencies of 30MHz, 1.8MHz, 117kHz and 113kHz so that dis-
tances of up to several kilometers can be measured accurately and displayed. The processes are as follows.
One of the four frequencies (30MHz, 1.8MHz, 117kHz and 113kHz) is selected by the control signal from
the CPU and the modulated light is emitted by the LED.
The light is reflected by the corner cube and returns.
The returned light undergoes the following in the amplifier.
Amplification: the signal is enhanced. Mixed wave detection: the frequency component is made 3.6kHz. Waveform rectification: the light is made into the frequency measurement signal.
A/D conversion is done for the measurement signal obtained by and it is changed into the distance data
by the microcomputer.
Perform the procedures to at each of the frequencies, 30MHz, 1.8MHz, 117kHz and 113kHz. The
"C" mark of the indicator moves to indicate the status.
The CPU combines the results from each of the frequencies and displays the distance.

value and make sure that the error is canceled.)
2. Remove the cover and connect the tool to the CPU unit. Check the waveform of the CCD which is proba-

6-2 Trouble Shooting of Angular Measurement Problem Unit
If the error code (Angle error) is displayed in the assembled product, there is a problem in the CCD unit, LED
unit or scale.
Each of angular measurement system units will be diagnosed as follows.
Preparation In the factory mode, check if the PWM value and PAT value are within standard. If they are not so, it is
necessary to diagnose the unit. (Refer to P. 9-4 for checking PWM/PAT in the factory mode.)
Remove the left cover. Check the CCD signal waveforms on the angular measurement PCB. (Refer to P. 10-2 of 10-2 Angular
Measurement Digital System Repairs.)
When the PWM value is beyond standard
The scale or CCD is soiled. Clean it. LED light intensity is faulty. The LED unit (in the horizontal side, angular measurement unit) may be
faulty. Replace it.
When the PAT value is beyond standard
The clearance may be faulty between the scale and CCD. Replace the CCD unit (for the horizontalside, angular measurement unit). When waveform is not proper
