The Black Out

Bang! Suddenly I woke up and I found myself lying on the soft green muddy grass. I didn't understand what had happened. All I knew was that my whole face was blood and everyone started to crowd. I started to shake in shock. I was looking for my mum but all I could see was blurry faces crowding me. I spotted my mum through all the heads. She started running the minute she saw me down and she pushed towards me. I wanted to say my arm hurt most but I was so in shock I could not speak. My little sister told the whole story to my mum as tears still dribbled down my cheek. I finally remembered what had happened as blood was being cleaned off my face. I remembered swinging on the swing on a hot sunny day. Then my hands got very slippery as I swung back. The next minute it felt like my hands had iost control. Before I knew it my hands had already slipped off the chains. I tried to reach for the chains but my hands could not grip on them. Then bang, I smashed into the muddy green grass. Then all of a sudden I felt a crunch in my wrist.

THE BIRD WITH TWO HEADS

Long, long ago, there lived a strange bird in a huge banyan tree. The tree stood beside a river. The strange bird had two heads, but only one stomach.

Once, while the bird was flying high in the sky, he saw an apple shaped fruit lying on the bank of the river. The bird swooped down, picked up the fruit and began to eat it. This was the most delicious fruit the bird had ever eaten.

As the bird had two heads, the other head protested, "I'm your brother head. Why don't you let me also eat this tasty fruit?" The first head of the bird replied, "Shut up.You know that we've only one stomach. Whichever head eats, the fruit will go to the same stomach. So it doesn't matter as to which head eats it. Moreover, I'm the one who found this fruit. So I've the first right to eat it."

Hearing this, the other head became silent. But this kind of selfishness on the part of the first head pinched him very much. One day, while flying, the other head spotted a tree bearing poisonous fruits. The other head immediately descended upon the tree and plucked a fruit from it. "Please don't eat this poisonous fruit," cried the first head. "If you eat it, both of us will die, because we have a common stomach to digest it." "Shut up!" shouted the other head. "Since I have plucked this fruit, I have every right to eat it."

The first head began to weep, but the other head didn't care. He wanted to take revenge. He ate the poisonous fruit. As a result both of them died.

The following text is for numbers 30 to 33.

The flightless ostrich is the world's largest bird. They roam African savanna and desert lands and get most of their water from the plants they eat.

Though they cannot fly, ostriches are fleet, strong runners. They can sprint up to 70 kilometers an hour. They may use their wings as "rudders" to help them change direction while running. An ostrich's powerful, long legs :b~ cover 3 to 5 meters in a single stride. These legs can also be formidable weapons. Each two-toed foot has a long, sharp claw.

Ostriches live in small herds that typically contain less than a dozen birds. The male sometimes mates with others in the group, and wandering males may also mate with lesser hens. All of the group's hens place their eggs in the dominant hen's nest. The dominant hen and male take turns incubating the giant eggs, each one of which weighs as much as two dozen chicken eggs.

Contrary to popular belief, ostriches do not bury their heads in the sane. At the approach of trouble, ostriches will lie low and press their long necks to the ground in an attempt to become less visible. Their plumage blends well with sandy soil and, from a distance, gives the appearance that they have buried their heads in the sand.

33. What do ostriches do to defend themselves from troubles? A. Make themselves invisible. B. Bury their heads in the sand. C. Lie low and press their long necks to the soil. D. Blend their body to the sandy soil thoroughly.

I never imagined that one day I would go to school with a bald head. However, it happened to me. It had been partly my laziness and partly my sister's fault that my head was bald. Here is the story.

One day, I noticed that my hair had grown too long. It was touching my collar. I thought my school's discipline master, Mr. Ferdy, would not like it. I would go to the barber but my sister stopped me saying, "Why waste so much money when I can do it for you free of charge?"

Actually I was doubt that she could do it. However, finally I agreed. I thought it would save me the walk and money.

She started snipping my hair with a pair of scissors. Halfway through, I panicked. I saw in the mirror that things were not going very right. But my sister insisted she had not finished yet and told me to be patient. At the end of snipping, when I saw myself in the mirror, I was so surprised. The cutting was not like what I wanted !

Using a hat to hide my hair, I went to a barber soon. He told me that there was no other way but for him to shave my head bald. I could say nothing but yes.

The following text is for numbers 40 to 42.

It was the day for the market and Raju, the farmer, was riding his cart along the country road. The rain gods had been smiling the whole night so it was very difficult for the horses to drag the load' through the deep mud. On his journey suddenly the wheels of the horse cart sank into the mire.

The more the horses pulled, the deeper the wheel sank. Raju searched for help but could not find anyone around. He looked defeated. He didn't make the slightest effort to get down on the wheel and lift it up by himself. Instead, he started cursing his luck for what happened. Looking up at the sky, he started shouting at God, "I am so unlucky! Why has this happened to me? Oh God, come .down to help me."

After a long wait, God finally appeared before Raju. He asked Raju, "Do you think you can move the chariot by simply looking at it and whining about it? Nobody will help you unless you make some effort to help yourself. Did you try to get the wheel out of the pothole by yourself? Get up and put your shoulder to wheel and you will soon find the way out."

Raju was ashamed of himself. He bent down and put his shoulder to the wheel and urged on the horses. In no time the wheel was out of the mire. Raju learnt his lesson.
