Pengertian Pengeringan

Pengertian pengeringan sendiri adalah menghilangkan sebagian kecil air dari suatu bahan atau proses pemakaian panas dan pemindahan air dari bahan yang dikeringkan yang berlangsung secara bersamaan. Pada proses pengeringan, air biasanya dihilangkan menjadi uap lewat udara. Ada beberapa metode yang digunakan dalam pengeringan berdasarkan kondisi fisik yang biasa digunakan dengan penambahan panas dan menghilangkan uap air. Alat yang digunakan untuk proses pengeringan disebut dryer.

Kategori Metode Pengeringan

1. Panas ditambahkan secara kontak langsung dengan udara yang dipanaskan pada tekanan atmosferik dan uap air yang terbentuk menguap ke udara.

2. Pada pengeringan secara vakum, proses penguapan air lebih cepat pada tekanan rendah dan panas ditambahkan secara tidak langsung lewat dinding metal atau radiasi

3. Pengeringan dengan suhu rendah yaitu air bersublimasi dari bahan yang beku

Klasifikasi Alat Pengering

Berdasarkan Cara Perpindahan Panas- Pengeringan langsung (Ex: tray dryer,

pneumatic dryer, rotary dryer, spray dryer, fluid bed dryer)

- Pengeringan tak langsung (Ex: cylinder dryer, drum dryer, vibrating tray dryer, screw conveyor dryer, agitated dryer, freeze dryer, vacuum rotary dryer)

Tunnel dryer merupakan rangkaian tray secara seri yang bergerak lambat melewati terowongan panjang.

Prinsip Kerja Tunnel Dryer

In this dryer, the materials to be dried are sent to the air heated tunnel for drying purpose. The material is entered at one end and the dried material is colleted at the other end of the tunnel. The outgoing material met the incoming air to ensure maximum drying and the out going air contacted the wettest material so that the air was as nearly saturated as possible.

Mekanisme Kerja

Mechanism of action: One of the doors of the tunnel is opened and the materials to be dried are placed to the trolleys and trucks are pushed slowly in the tunnel and then door is closed. Hot air is circulated and passed through the rail truck and perforated trolleys. The hot air then followed are recirculated with the help of fans and the material becoming dried. The moist air is passed out through the exhaust after completion of drying. The door is opened and the trolleys are taken out of the funnel and some new trolleys with the wet materials are introduced into the trucks and the process is repeated.

Karakteristik Tunnel Dryer

(1). Kecepatan penguapan yang paling tinggi didapat pda awal terowongan. (2). Ketika bahan bergerak di dalam terowongan, maka bahan tersebut bersentuhan dengan udara yang bersuhu lebih dingin. Kecepatan pengeringan turun dan bahaya suhu yang tinggi bagi bahan berkurang.

Keuntungan dan Kerugian Penggunaan Tunnel Dryer

Keuntungan1.    Comparing with the

compartmental dryers tunnel dryers has the advantage of continuous operation.

2.    A large amount of materials can be dried.

3.    Tunnel dryers are used for drying of paraffin wax, gelatin, soap, pottery, etc.

Kerugian1. High labor cost for

loading and unloading.2. Thermolabile

substances can’t be dried.

3. Drying rage is slow, so time consuming.

4. It is not suitable for small scale production.

5. It is a non-agitated process.
