India has always been the most favoured destination of the foreign investors and when it comes to IT ,India is perhaps the most favoured investment sites as far as the off shoring of white collar jobs in information and communication technology enabled services is concerned , and the INDIAN STATE that has succeeded capitalizing on the IT boom has undoubtedly been WEST BENGAL.

DESTINATION: WEST BENGAL

• Over the three year period (between 1998-99 and 2000-01), it has also ranked as the fifth most attractive destination for investments.

• The IT-Enabled Services segment, which has

recorded over 100 per cent growth in employees in the last 5 years. And it is expected to grow much faster than IT services in the short term.

Page 10: BIDHANNAGAR COLLEGE

Honourable Chief Minister of West Bengal, Shri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee perceives IT as a major growth driver for investment and employment generation and expects the Rs.2200 crore business producing sector to comprise 15%-20% of the National Software Exports by 2010.

• High-technology industries are subject to the same market forces as every other industry.

• Forces that were relatively minor in the industrial economy turn out to be critical in the information economy. Second-order effects for industrial goods are often first-order effects for information goods.

• Constant fixed cost & zero marginal cost is very common indeed a baseline case for information goods and hence they create NATURAL MONOPOLY for IT industry.

SUPPLY-SIDE ECONOMIES OF SCALE

First, the biggest firm has the most significant cost advantages; firms will compete intensively to be biggest, and consumers will benefit from that competition as the firms would charge lower prices in its attempt to build its market share.

Secondly, information technology has reduced fixed costs and thus the minimum efficient scale of operation in many markets. Moreover, rapidly falling costs and rapidly increasing markets often causes one to overcome cost advantages via leapfrogging.

DEMAND-SIDE ECONOMIES OF SCALE

Also called NETWORK EXTERNALITIES

• With supply side economies, average cost decreases with scale, while with demand side economies of scale, average revenue (demand) increases with scale.

• They create multiple equilibria .
